The record for the highest score in IPL history currently belongs to the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). On April 15th, 2024, during their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, SRH posted a jaw-dropping total of 287/3. This score not only shattered the previous IPL record but also went down as the second-highest T20 total ever recorded, behind only Nepal’s staggering 314/4 against Mongolia in 2023.
The architects of this historic knock were SRH’s openers, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Sharma blazed to a 16-ball fifty, the fastest in IPL history at that time, before Head continued the onslaught with a blistering century off just 39 deliveries. Heinrich Klaasen also chipped in with a crucial knock of 78, propelling SRH to a total that RCB, despite a valiant effort (262/7), could not chase down.
2. Sunrisers Hyderabad (277/3)
SRH’s Batsmen broke RCB’s long-held record on 27 March 2024 by scoring 277 with only 3 wickets and make Highest score in IPL history. Heinrich Klaasen and Abhishek, Travis Head, and Aiden Markram, SRH batsmen, rewrote IPL’s history by breaking RCB’s record for the highest score in the history of the league.
RCB held the record for more than a decade until Klaasen’s explosive performance in Klaasen’s final over of the SRH innings secured the record. Klaasen and Abhishek scored fifties with a strike rate of over 200.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – (272/7)
We can’t forget the recent heroics of the Kolkata Knight Riders! Just a whisker away from the top spot, KKR notched up a staggering 272 runs against Delhi Capitals in 2024.
The explosive batting of Sunil Narine and the young talent Angkrish Raghuvanshi propelled them to this record-breaking total, showcasing the depth and firepower in their batting line-up.
4. Royal Challengers Bangalore (263/5)
Royal Challengers Bangalore third Highest score in IPL history, the IPl franchise that is so beloved, scored a staggering 263 runs at just 5 wickets on April 23, 2013. Chris Gayle, the star player of RCB, contributed 175 runs alone and remained unbeaten. This is a respectable score for a team in the IPL.
Gayle could have scored a double hundred in T20 cricket with a few more balls. Gayle etched himself into the history books ahead of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Virat Kohli. Pune Warriors India was limited to 133/9.
5. Lucknow SuperGiants (257/5)
Lucknow SuperGiants almost broke RCB’s record of unbeatable runs when they scored 257 in 20 overs while losing only five wickets and became Therd Highest score in IPL history. LSG batted against Punjab Kings and all players began hitting boundaries as soon as they entered the pitch.
Marcus Stoinis scored 72 off 40 and Nicholas Pooran 45 off 19 respectively. PBKS also batted very well and would have won any other day, but fell short of winning by 56 runs despite scoring 201 runs.
6. Royal Challengers Bangalore (248/3)
It’s rare to see two players score a hundred in the same T20 game. RCB achieved the feat against Gujarat Lions in 2016. Virat Kohli scored 109 in 55 balls while AB de Villiers scored 129 in 52 deliveries. Gujarat Lions were limited to 104 runs over 20 overs.
7. Chennai Super Kings (246/5)
In 2010, the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were involved in a classic cricket match. CSK scored 246 with 5 wickets left to spare when batting first. RR played incredibly well but only managed to reach 223 runs. Murali Vijay, who scored 127 runs from 56 balls for CSK, was named MVP of the match.
8. Kolkata Knight Riders (245)
Kings XI Punjab played another high-scoring, but thrilling match. Kolkata Knight Riders scored a massive 245 runs in just 20 overs. Sunil Narine won the match.
The West Indies all-rounder opened for KKR, scoring 75 runs in 26 deliveries. KXIP tried to fight back, with Captain Ravichandran Ashwin leading the team. But it was not enough. KKR won the match by 31 runs.
